Sometimes Life Gets in the Way: The Start of My 2023 Round-Up

December is usually a time of year I travel. For 27 years, there has been a group of internet Disney enthusiasts who meet in Walt Disney World. Back when it started, there weren’t many places to talk about Disney World on the internet. A lot has changed in 27 years. We went from hundreds of participants back in the early days and some pretty fun meet-ups to a core group of friends now who hang out in the World. The week before I was to meet up with my friends, my son who recently got back from deployment wanted to take his family to Disney as well so we went early and spent time with him.

That’s the main reason I haven’t been around the past couple of weeks. Time to sit down and actually compose something has not been there, not even to just revise an old review. I do try to put thought into those revisions, unless there’s just so much there that I just have to say it was originally written in a certain year.

I actually started this three days ago and everything got turned upside down. The storm that came through has flooded everything around here. Last night there was a helicopter extracting trapped people along the Saco River. They were going to open the Middle School as a shelter but ended up moving it to the High School because the water from the rivers was getting close to the Middle School, plus it was in an area where they were thinking about preventatively shutting off the power. I don’t now if they ever actually had to do that. The Saco River enters flood stage at 9 feet. Last night it topped out at 17.7 feet. The record was 19 feet back in 1979. This storm is now the second worst in terms of flooding in the history of the area. I guess it’s some relief that it wasn’t snow, but the snow might have actually been easier to handle. We didn’t lose power and only lost internet for several hours on Monday morning which was a good thing! Last year around this time we lost power for 36 hours in a snowstorm. That was the first and only time we lost the power for that long.

So it’s been the good with the bad to close out this year. I haven’t had much time to really clear my head and write, but I’m trying to at least summarize the year over the next few days. Between the holidays and other events, I’ve just had a lot going on and finding any time for myself is difficult at the moment.

  1. That is some wild weather. I love Disney World but I have not been there in many years. It was at least 10 years ago, maybe longer. I am trying to see if I can comment now. If you see this comment it worked.
